What a long range drone costs
Long range drones sit in three price bands and the jump between the first two is the one that changes the flying. Under one hundred pounds the link is a basic 2.4 GHz radio with a printed aerial, and the range claim on the listing should be read as a claim about a field with nothing in it. The band from roughly three hundred to eight hundred pounds is where a proprietary digital link appears: a clean picture at distance, telemetry back to the controller, and a controller with real aerials that can be pointed. Above that band the money goes into the camera, the airframe and the obstacle sensors rather than into reach, because reach has already been solved and the legal limit has not moved.
The hobby route is priced differently. A dedicated long range control system bought as a transmitter module and a receiver costs less than the gap between two ready to fly camera machines, and it will reach further than both, but it arrives as parts and it assumes you can bind, configure and set failsafes yourself. What flying a long range drone is like
Flying a long range drone is quieter and more anxious than flying anything else in the hobby. The first few minutes are ordinary. Then the aircraft becomes a dot, then a speck you find by looking slightly away from it, and then you are flying a map on a screen and glancing up to reassure yourself. The signal strength bar becomes the instrument you watch most. What the class demands is discipline about the return leg rather than skill with the sticks: the aircraft goes out with a tailwind pushing it and comes back into that same wind, slower, with less battery, and the further out it is the worse that arithmetic gets.
What it punishes is optimism. It punishes launching without letting the home point set, flying out over water or a wood where a forced landing is a lost aircraft, and standing with a building between yourself and the machine.
